Official WCA Speedcubing Timer Standards & Average Calculations

Our online Speedcubing Practice Timer is engineered to mirror official World Cube Association (WCA) competition timing regulations. Featuring millisecond precision, keyboard spacebar triggers, official scramble generation, and live Ao5 and Ao12 trimmed statistics, it provides everything a competitive speedcuber needs to track their development.

Understanding competitive timing rules, inspection mechanics, and penalty standards separates casual hobbyists from disciplined tournament competitors.

1. The Official 15-Second Inspection Window (WCA Article A)

WCA Regulations

In official WCA competitions, competitors have up to 15 seconds to inspect the cube before their first move. Starting between 15.01s and 17.00s incurs a +2 second penalty; starting after 17.00s results in a DNF (Did Not Finish).

2. The Mathematics of Trimmed Averages (Ao5 & Ao12)

Statistical Measurement

To prevent lucky skips or lock-ups from distorting your rating, the WCA uses trimmed mean averages: In an Ao5, the fastest and slowest times are dropped, averaging the remaining 3 times: Ao5 = (T2 + T3 + T4) / 3.

3. Competition Penalties: +2 Seconds vs DNF

Judging Criteria

A +2 second penalty is applied if a layer is misaligned by more than 45 degrees at the finish. A DNF is assessed if multiple moves remain or if the timer is stopped while hands are still turning a face.
