Solve Rubik's Cube
⚡ 4x4 Rubik's Revenge Reduction Guide

How to Solve a 4x4 Rubik's Cube

The 4x4 has NO fixed center pieces! We reduce the 4x4 into a standard 3x3 in 3 steps: 1. Build Centers, 2. Pair Edges, and 3. Solve 3x3 + Fix Parity.

1

Step 1: Solve 4x4 Centers (2x2 Center Blocks)

No fixed center pieces exist on 4x4!
Phase 1

Your goal is to build a 2x2 block of 4 center stickers for all 6 colors. Unlike a 3x3, the centers can move around, so you MUST respect the standard color scheme:

Standard WCA Color Layout:
  • White is opposite Yellow
  • Green is opposite Blue
  • Red is opposite Orange
💡 Mnemonic Trick: Look at White top, Green front: Red is always on the RIGHT!
2

Step 2: Edge Pairing (Pair 12 Double-Edges)

Combine 24 single edge pieces into 12 pairs
Phase 2

Once centers are complete, find 2 matching edge pieces. Bring them onto the front left and front right layers, execute a slice move (Uw), swap out the solved edge, and restore (Uw')!

Edge Flipping Algorithm (Flips Front-Right Edge Piece)

Use this move when both matching edges are on the same front slice level to flip one upside down before slicing!

3

Step 3: 4x4 Parity Algorithms (OLL & PLL Parity)

Crucial algorithms impossible on a 3x3 cube
Phase 3

Because 4x4 edges and centers can be flipped internally, 50% of 4x4 solves encounter parity errors during the 3x3 stage. Master these 2 essential algorithms:

OLL ParityFlipped 1 Top Edge

Single Flipped Top Edge

When 1 yellow edge block is flipped upside down (impossible on 3x3). Hold flipped edge in FRONT top slot:

* Note: Rw means turn both rightmost inner & outer slices together.

PLL ParitySwapped 2 Edges

Swapped Opposite Top Edges

When 2 opposite top edges need to be swapped (impossible on 3x3). Hold 1 swapped edge in FRONT:

* Note: r2 means turn inner right slice 180°, Uw2 means double top slice 180°.

🏆 Speedcubing 4x4 Pro Tips

1. Centers First

Never mix up center creation with edge pairing. Solve all 6 centers 100% first.

2. 3x3 Outer Turns Only

Once centers and edges are reduced, turn ONLY outer single layers like a 3x3.

3. Memory Mnemonic

PLL Parity rhythm: r2 U2, r2 Uw2, r2 Uw2. Super fast and easy to memorize!
